MARINA HOVHANNISYAN

LOS ANGELES-BASED SOPRANO MARINA HOVHANNISYAN IS A VOCAL PERFORMER AND MUSIC SCHOLAR. HER WORK IS FOCUSED ON ARMENIAN SACRED CHANT AND EUROPEAN RENAISSANCE AND BAROQUE REPERTOIRES.

MARINA IS A RECENT GRADUATE OF THE USC THORNTON SCHOOL OF MUSIC IN EARLY MUSIC VOCAL PERFORMANCE. SHE EXPLORES THE GEOGRAPHICAL AND CHRONOLOGICAL BOUNDARIES OF EARLY MUSIC THROUGH PERFORMANCE AND SCHOLARLY WORK. marina has graduated usc with highest distinction, receiving first prize in the 2023 usc graduate research symposium and membership in the eta chapter of the pi kappa lamda national honors music society.

Marina’s recent projects include co-directing the usc collegium musicum in early and traditional armenian music. Here, she taught armenian language and musical style to ensemble members, directed guest musicians, curated the full concert program, and worked with usc professor and early music ensemble director professor adam knight gilbert in showcasing historical performances of armenian music for the spring 2023 usc collegium concert. As a winner of the 2022 beverly hills national auditions, marina brought together a 5-member ensemble to feature baroque italian airs and sacred armenian chant in a 2-part concert series based in san diego and los angeles, california.

Marina’s recent experience as the usc early music Graduate Teaching Assistant involved managing the usc thornton baroque sinfonia and assistant teaching courses in undergraduate music history. With training in leading choral and instrumental ensembles and strengths as soloist and ensemble member, Marina's musical interests extend into vocal performance and ensemble direction.
